Understanding the Different Curly Hair Types

Curly hair is unique and comes in various textures and patterns. To effectively care for and style your curly hair, it's essential to understand your hair type. The hair typing system, developed by Andre Walker, categorizes curly hair into different types based on its pattern and texture.

Here's an overview of the different curly hair types:

  1. Type 2: Wavy Hair
Wavy hair has loose, S-shaped waves. It falls between straight and curly hair and is categorized into three subtypes:
    • 2A: Fine and thin waves.
    • 2B: Medium-textured waves with a slight bend.
    • 2C: Thick waves with more defined S-shapes.
  2. Type 3: Curly Hair
Curly hair forms ringlets and coils. It has more volume and texture compared to wavy hair. Type 3 hair is classified into three subcategories:
    • 3A: Loose and big curls.
    • 3B: Springy and well-defined curls.
    • 3C: Tight corkscrew curls.
  3. Type 4: Coily Hair
Coily hair has tight coils and a high density. It's often referred to as kinky or Afro-textured hair and is further divided into three subtypes:
    • 4A: Coils with a visible S-pattern.
    • 4B: Z-shaped coils that can shrink significantly.
    • 4C: Tightly packed coils with minimal defined curl patterns.

Determining Your Curly Hair Type

Identifying your curly hair type can help you choose appropriate products and styling techniques. Here's how you can determine your curly hair type:

  • Observe your curl pattern: Examine the shape and size of your curls to determine whether they are wavy, curly, or coily.
  • Consider your hair's behavior: Take note of how your hair reacts to different products and weather conditions. Does it frizz easily or maintain its shape?
  • Assess your hair's thickness: Determine whether your hair is fine, medium, or thick. This will help you understand its overall texture and volume.

Caring for Your Curly Hair Type

Once you've identified your curly hair type, it's crucial to adopt a hair care routine tailored to your specific needs. Here are some general tips to keep your curly locks healthy and beautiful:

  • Use a Curly Hair Approved, gentle shampoo and conditioner,
  • Avoid brushing your hair when it's dry to prevent frizz. Instead, use a wide-toothed comb or your fingers to detangle while it's wet.
  • Apply a leave-in conditioner or curl-enhancing product to define and moisturize your curls.
  • Avoid excessive heat styling and opt for air-drying or diffusing instead. Letting your hair dry naturally is always the best,
  • At a minimum, sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase to minimize friction and protect your curls while you sleep. If you can, use a silk or satin sleep cap.

Remember, each person's hair is unique, and what works for one may not work for another. Experiment with different techniques and products to find what suits your curly hair type best.

Keep in mind that everyone's hair is unique, and you may have a combination of different curl types on your head.

Note that hair typing systems like this are subjective and may not fully capture the diversity of curly hair. Everyone's hair is unique, and factors such as hair porosity, density, and thickness also play a role in determining the overall texture and behavior of curly hair. The rating of your curly hair ultimately depends on your personal preference and satisfaction with your hair's appearance and manageability.

Different curl types also require different styling products and care, so keep in mind lighter, looser curls may not require a thick, heavy styling product, while thicker hair may require a heavier product to hold those curls.

Also consider sprays against creams. Some tighter curly hair will benefit with a spray while others may find sprays to heavy. The same with creams, some are lighter than others.

Also keep in mind the longer the hair, the more product you will need plus longer hair also PULLS your curl down with weight so a strong hold, defining product is best.
